Red light therapy is a natural treatment with no side effect that’s helping thousands of Canadians with pain management and reduction. First discovered by NASA over forty years ago to help plants grow in space, the space agency soon realized that red light had other benefits, such as improving the rate of wound healing.
Red light therapy was initially used as a beauty and skin rejuvenation therapy. As more and more people experienced red light therapy, it became apparent that it also has positive effects for those living with painful conditions such as arthritis and joint and nerve injuries.
Today, red light therapy is used for a range of uses including anti-aging, skin conditions, wound care and healing, and pain relief.
Now, the healing and restorative effects of red light therapy are available to you at our health and wellness centre in Tillsonburg.

How does red light therapy work?
Red light therapy, or photobiomodulation, works by gently infusing your body with pure red light. The red light penetrates your skin to a depth of about 8mm, where it is absorbed. The light energy is converted to cellular energy, which stimulates a variety of body processes:
- increases production of collagen
- stimulates more efficient healing
- reduces inflammation
- stimulates cell clean up (phagocytosis)
- promotes improved circulation
- increases lymphatic activity
Red light therapy: the science
Every cell in our body has its own ‘power plant’, the mitochondria. When our cells are stressed due to illness, injury or aging, these mitochondria produce nitric oxide. The nitric oxide displaces oxygen in a protein inside the mitochondria, cytochrome c oxidase. This in turn reduces the amount of ATP in the cytochrome c oxidase, and leads to oxidative stress.
Certain wavelengths of red light breaks down the nitric oxide so the oxygen balance is restored, and the oxidative stress reduced. The mitochondria can then work as normal, cell metabolism improves, and the body can heal itself more effectively again.
